There once were four kingdoms, and of them, four rulers. These were the kingdoms of fire, water, growth, and electricity. These rulers would have children that would be rulers at the young age of fifteen; that was when their abilities would kick in. The young age was never a problem in the kingdoms, though, but secrecy was. The kingdoms would keep to themselves, even new rulers were never told of. The people would even hide from the rulers, and the rulers the people. Soon, half breeds arrived, but nobody knew until one spoke out. There were arguments about which half-breeds would be in which kingdoms. Eventually, half-breeds outnumbered the pures, and were sent to kingdoms of their own. The law was laid down so that kingdoms were forbidden to love other kingdoms, and secrecy was the only option. Then there were the ten kingdoms of fire, water, growth, electricity, fire-growth, fire-water, fire-electric, water-growth, water-electric, and electric-growth. But could one ruler, and one crisis, change it all?
chapter 1
I was in my room dressing for the occasion of my crowning. My dress was orange for the electric color, and my hair a natural shade of bright pink. My crown was only the finest woven from thunderbolts themselves and hair down, short and wavy. Jewels were in a neat bolt on my forehead and an amber amulet was around my neck. I was ready to be crowned. I watched as the portal to my kingdom opened and I walked through the rectangular warp.
I was behind the door to my kingdom's gathering place. Outside, I remembered from yesterday's rehearsal, was the giant golden tree full of ripe, red apples behind a stage with orange crystals as a natural background.
My mother whispered in my ear, "Are you ready, Alice?"
I replied firmly, "Yes."
"Then let it begin." She ushered me through the door.
There were so many people waiting outside. To calm myself, I thought of my mother. Red hair with soft, large curls throughout. Her dress was completely studded with diamonds and silver lining. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was the richest of all the rulers. But then again, nobody knew anything about the other kingdoms. I opened my eyes. Realizing that my audience was waiting, I began. "Hello good people of my kingdom. I am so honored-" I broke off. The audience murmured worriedly. "A storm," I whispered. There were very rarely storms in the kingdoms. Without warning, rain started to pound and wind ripped the air in two. Lightning struck everywhere and a jolt came down on me. I knew that everyone, including me, would just soak up the lightning, but something wasn't right. I realized that my senses were cut off. I didn't know if I had fallen or if I was standing, and I was scared. I stayed like that until my thoughts didn't even come. Nothingness. Then, I felt something.
Time had passed. My eyes were dry for staying open for so long, and every part of me ached. Images started to appear from blurs as I realized I was in my kingdom's hospital.
"That was some blow you took," said a nurse. "I wonder what caused that storm. We need to make sure you're okay. You need rest."
That was the last thing I wanted to hear. Then I started to worry. What if that lightning screwed up my powers? Will this have anything to do with my ruling? How could a powerless teenager rule? A wave of tiredness swept over me and my thoughts drove me into a worried sleep.
I woke up hurting all over my body. Even though I'd been sleeping all of that time, I still felt exhausted. The nurse was looking over me.
"Come with me," she said. She gestured for me to follow. With a moan I stumbled after the nurse.
The nurse led me to a small room with a mirror. She left me to examine myself. My face was fine and my hair messy but unharmed. Then, I looked at my legs. They were bruised and barely touched, but something else caught my eye. I lifted up the hospital gown to see myself scorched and covered in burns. My thighs were singed and my stomach lashed and oozing. I touched the place where the amber amulet had rested on my neck and saw the necklace's gold chain melted to my skin. I turned to see my back bloody where the flames licked my skin. My arms were covered with lines of burnt flesh and my signifying thunderbolt was scorched at its tip. Under my collarbone was a hollow dip where the first of my dress was burnt. For the first time, I looked to see sparks in the irises of my eyes from the energy I'd soaked up. It stung everywhere and tears zapped from my eyes. Soon, the room was filled with static. The nurse knocked on the door and stepped into the room of sparks. She led me back to my room and left me to cry. How could a ruler be burnt off of her own element?
It was day three in the hospital. I was ready to go home, of course, because my people heal much faster than mortals. The only things that could remind me of that fateful day were the pale scars lining my torso. My mother had never left my bedside. She helped me up and led me to the portal home. I went straight to my bed. I felt wiped out.
After a three hour nap, my mother nudged me awake. "It's time to get ready," she said warmly.
"For what?" I asked.
"You are the new ruler. You must be crowned."
"I looked at her blankly. "But my dress was burned. What will I wear?"
"I have arranged a new outfit, jewelry and everything. I'll give you an hour to get ready. The clothes are on the end of your bed."
I looked at the edge of my bed. Sure enough, there were clothes there. I crawled forward to get a better view. The dress was tight fitting at the top with flowing waves of orange, yellow, and red on the skirt. My head-piece was a halo of woven thunderbolts, and a ruby necklace was ready for my wearing. I got dressed and was just finishing up with brushing my hair when somebody knocked on the door.
My mother stepped in. "You look beautiful, honey," she commented.
"Thank you," I replied.
"Hurry now." My mother gestured to speed up. "The crowning is in fifteen minutes."
"Ready," I assured. On that note, my mother led me to the entrance to the gathering place.
I stepped through the door, calmed myself, and began to speak. "I am so honored to be your next ruler. I will protect you with my life, I will govern you as your queen, and I will listen to you as your ruler. Thank you." I stepped back.
My mother stood up to the pedestal. "It is now time for the first release of my daughter's power." She looked to the left. There were two people setting up a target for me to shoot at. "Whenever you're ready." The people gave a thumbs up and my mother nodded at me.
I raised my hands, pointing them at the targets and released my energy. Nothing happened. I tried again. Still nothing. I began to worry. I held my hand like a claw. Suddenly, sparks started to fly from my fingertips. I balled up my hand, then released it. A huge ball of energy rushed toward the target, which was zapped to a pile of burning rubble. Applause exploded from the audience. My mother took off her tiara and set it on my head.
She was bursting with pride. "My daughter....This is the new ruler of electricity!"
