I might be getting well over my head this time. For the past 3 years, I have been making my money off of journalism, small source publishing and the bit of art commissions I do for locally interested people. Until a few months ago, I hadn't done many gallery shows and curating. My last trip to Europe changed that.
After entering an annual art competition held every year in Italy, I met a group of artists and supporters that were going to do a show composed of fifty rising artists from all over the world. They said they liked my work and wanted a few artists from America to join in. When I heard that the show did not pay and that it was charity I was hesitant due to the fact that I had problems with currency at the time. I also thought about the attention my work would be getting if I did join the fifty and so I did!
I was working on another commission in the States when I was called to meet my other teammates. I was never told that I had to works with others and it became an issue. The team I was paired with was composed of other rising artist. Three were from France, another from England and a certain artist bred America. I met with the three that could make it. One of the French artist couldn't join for the short weekend to discuss what we were to do and though we were all painters by trade collaboration was not a trait for most of us. The goal was to unite a team and we were to all work for a common goal. The selected theme was world disasters such as floods, tornadoes and earthquakes. We were to work together as a team. That wasn't the case for us. One of the French played a game of fisticuffs with the artist from England and so we all went our separate ways. None of us could back down and we all had to participate. So we did our own thing.
I immediately began to paint a painting that was 30x15. It would be the largest painting I have ever done. The image is of a tsunami decimating a culture of people as their loved ones were swept away. It would be a powerful image for anyone to see for such a size and theme. But in this darkest of images, there is the beauty of human body as it is tussled about in the underwater currents. This peaceful image of the bodies decorating the seascape will be sold through auction for an amount of money that will be benefited to a charity of choice by the team.
I wish I could say more about myself, the others and the league I have been socializing with, but I don't want to say anything too specific about something that would reveal my name or concentration I am involving myself in. I have a reputation I want separated from this sort of environment that might complicate things. Wish me luck as I will be meeting with the entire team this weekend and into the next to discuss what each of us have been doing for the past months. Wish me luck because I'm going to need it if I'm going to meet with these short tempered bunch. And hope that all the art sells for big money!
